Socialization
Socialism, Marx’s road to Communism (a statement many would be quick to censor), relies upon the supposition that man is basically good. The idea, in contrast to the stark communism of the former Soviet Union and China, is to slowly hand everything into governmental control - and from their to pure communism.
When we socialize something in today’s vocabulary, we are handing that something over to government control. Slowly, by working within the government already in place, socialists are bringing about a new world order that they will be sorely disillusioned about if they ever are truly successful.
What they believe will happen, I do not know, nor can I speculate, but I know from what I know of man, of what will happen if we turn all to the government. As the government gains more power, tyranny will increase. Power corrupts; everyone knows the adage, but who has ever stopped to apply it to socialism? Hand everything to the government so that the government can handle it will not make it better but worse. Hand power to the government and they will not relegate, they will skim and mismanage. Please do not read me wrong, I am not demonizing the government, I am a patriot. I merely believe that government has its limits.
Abraham Lincoln agrees with me (or I with him) that “The legitimate object of government, is to do for a community of people, whatever they need to have done, but can not do, at all, or can not, so well do, for themselves -- in their separate, and individual capacities."
If we do live by this principle, then I think it sad how little we can do for ourselves these days. Try living without it and you will lose your strength. Rely on the government and government becomes all - give it all to the government and the government will govern it, and you will lose all your say, for if the government is your choice then government will be your only choice.
Take FEMA, what happens when government steps in to handle environmental disasters? In our past, communities rose up and supported one another and that support was so fast and efficient that it saved thousands of lives. Personal philanthropy and neighborly kindness - versus what? The government steps up to plate and what happens? It finds it is incapable of reacting as fast as the people on location and cannot manage the situation once it arrives because it knows nothing of what has or is happening or what needs to be done. But the real crime is that because our trust has been placed in government, us citizens have fallen asleep, we look to the government for help and we cannot help ourselves any longer. We gave the government power over that which we can do for ourselves and now we have lost our ability to do what we were able to do for ourselves. Again, do not hear me saying that the government has been no help and that the citizens have abandoned their neighbor. That is not what I am saying, government help is needed and has been of good (only ultimate control of natural disasters should rely on community) and there are many great citizens who act and work selflessly for their communities in times of crisis (but the universal effort of communities in times of crisis in the past far surpass the numbers of today). We have placed our faith in the wrong place.
A better example may be the medical field. What will happen when we hand over our hospitals to the government? Let me tell you from what I have gathered from other nations who have nationalized (socialized) health care: you will not be able to choose who your doctor is, you will have to apply for secondary opinions, it will not be guaranteed, You will have to pay for everyone else’s medical bills. The government will decide what you as a doctor will do. Abortion will not be a matter of choice for doctors - they will perform it or they will lose their job. Euthanasia will be decided by the government, as will what drugs are allowed and what treatments will be given to which diseases. Doctors will have no incentive what-so-ever to treat you humanely, they are paid by the hour - it does not matter if you like them or not, or if they loose your business or not, for they are paid the same one way or the other. You may have to wait months, perhaps years, for simple surgeries (like eye surgery) or perhaps even a decade for more for complex surgeries or treatments. Truly, there is a reason that those who can afford it come to America for medical treatment - it is because we have the best in the world (at least, we did). Will we truly relinquish this area of our life over to an organism that is incapable of managing it better than we can ourselves? How foolish.
Marxism is a nice idea on paper, but application falls apart and it is because it relies upon the supposition (the false supposition) that man is basically good and perfectible. Well you tell me, am I perfect? Are they? Are you? Will we?
How foolish.
