Divorce
Marriage, a union of husband and wife. Divorce, the separation. We all know the divorce rate in America. It is atrocious. Fifty-fifty. Many are so afraid of the divorce rate that they simply skip the marriage part of a relationship and simply co-exist with the man or woman that they love. So many don’t believe it is worth the harm anymore. Others are so desensitized to it that they no longer see the harm in it. You get tied, then you get untied. It is as simple as that.
There used to be only one reason that would justify divorce, now it matters not what the reason is, it is within your right to divorce for what ever the reason. For some it is just a game, for others it is a way to escape mistakes, for others it is a heart wrenching event, and for some it is a scam. For so many, marriage doesn’t have any meaning anymore. There is no strength or unity in it. It is a label that we put on and put off like the placement of a hat.
But there is great impact on the people involved in divorce, not just the husband and wife, but any children that have come out or from that covenant relationship. The Bible says that marriage makes the two one flesh. The two become one. Divorce, as the destruction of the family, is literally tearing one into two (or more). This cannot be anything but a terribly destructive force.
As far as statistics can help us, they help to prove my point. Divorcees have lowered life expectancies, a first divorce increase the probability of a second divorce by fifty percent, depression and other mental illnesses can occur after divorces, and of course the emotional, physical, and economic strain is incredible. But the highest damage is done to the children.
Children of divorced parents have lower life expectancies, higher risks of having divorces of their own, increased chances of being victims of abuse, taking drugs, higher high school drop-our ratings and lower grade scores, lower income and, without a father figure are 3 times more likely to see jail time. They are more likely to commit suicide, have health, mental, emotional, or behavior problems. Many do not know how to handle conflict, they have lower social competency, trouble with their sexuality, have higher rates of premarital sex, higher numbers of sexual mates, and more children out of wed-lock.
Any psychologist can tell you that the development of a child is greatly dependent upon both parent figures, without one or the other, the child is left troubled, abandoned, lost. There are over four million babies born each year here in America, half will go through their parents divorcing by the time they are 18 years of age. This is a harm that we are afflicting upon ourselves, and it needs to stop.
