Christianity
Denominations exist within Christianity due to differences in tradition and secondary interpretations, but all Christians have a set of foundational beliefs.
Christians believe in one God who created the heavens and the earth. The Bible is written by people but guided by God. The Bible is God’s word and we trust it as Truth.
The Bible speaks about three entities in such a way that we have formulated a doctrine (doctrine is simply a big word meaning teaching) called the Trinity. The Trinity is the doctrine that there is three ‘persons’ but only one God. There is God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. This is very confusing for many people. I believe it may be impossible to fully understand what that means or looks like, but it is not irreconcilable. God is one in three persons.
Jesus is God’s son who came to earth - he was fully human and fully God. He came and lived among us and taught us many things, performing miracles and teaching. He fulfilled all old testament prophesies that spoke about Him. He was beaten, flogged, and hung on a cross though he was innocent of all wrong-doing but He willingly died so that His death could atone (pay) for our crimes (sin or disobedience) against God.
The Bible teaches through the creation story that God created us with free will and when we chose to disobey (sin), the world became what we call a fallen world. Child-bearing became painful and work became toil and the ground itself was cursed upon our account. Out of this portrayal, we have come to believe that man is inherently evil. Not that man Is evil, but that we have an innate tendency to sin (disobey). This means that we believe it nigh impossible to never sin, and with sin comes punishment. The point though is not our sin or our just punishment, but the point is that there is a need To be saved. That we need a savior, which Jesus justifiably can be for us if we choose to believe Him.
Christians believe in heaven and hell, angels and demons. Christians believe besides the physical, there is the spiritual. The Bible teaches that belief in Jesus Christ is the only way to heaven because heaven is perfection and we in our sinful state could not ever be able to obtain it by ourselves, therefore Jesus paid for our ticket into heaven and He alone can grant you entrance.
There are ten general areas of a worldview. A worldview is a system of beliefs that is both systematic and all-encompassing. It is the glasses through which we see the world. The Christian worldview can be summed up with the following subjects.
Theology - Theism (God exists)
Philosophy - Supernaturalism (Spirit exists)
Ethics - Absolutes (Morality is absolute)
Biology - Creation (God created everything)
Psychology - Dualism (Mind-Body)
Sociology - Traditional (Home, Church and State)
Law - Biblical and Natural Law (Special and General Revelation)
Politics - Justice, Freedom and Order (the Right and True)
Economics - Stewardship of Property (Responsibility)
History - Historical Resurrection (Reliability of the Bible)
In answer to the basic questions of life:
Who is God? God is the God of the Bible, He is love, just, merciful, righteous, and sovereign.
Who is man? Man is fallen.
How did we get here? God made us.
What is man’s purpose? To serve and love God.
