Trotting out the Toddler
A fetus is latin for baby. So why is it okay to kill a baby in the womb when it not okay to kill a toddler? This is the essence of the argument, and used properly I think it can combat every single argument put up against it.
You see, pro-choice has a burden of proof that needs to be answered. The question they need to answer is why a fetus is okay to kill.
When answering this, four main answers come up, for there are only about four differences between a fetus and a newborn.
1) The development - The fetus is not as developed and thus is somehow not fully a person yet and thus can be killed.
2) The location - The fetus is in the womb and thus part of the woman and she can do with her body what she wants.
3) The size - The fetus is smaller than a newborn. It is not a person, but just a blob of tissue.
4) Dependence - The fetus is dependent upon the mother for nutrients and sustenance and is a drain on her system. Shouldn’t she have a say on that?
Now, let me trot out the toddler. Here is a revision of those same arguments. Let us see if there is not a special pleading here.
1) The development - The toddler is not as developed and thus is not fully a person yet and thus can be killed.
2) The location - The toddler is in the crib owned by the woman and she can do with her property what she wants.
3) The size - The toddler is smaller than an adult. It is not a person, but just a blob of skin and bones.
4) Dependence - The toddler is dependent upon the mother for nutrients and sustenance and is a drain on her bank account. Shouldn’t she have a say on that?
All of these statements are true. A toddler is not fully developed, it is smaller, has little say in where it is or where it can go, is not full grown, and is very dependent upon the parents for it’s survival. So is it alright to kill it?
The point is not to be brazen. The point is that there is a special pleading going on when pro-choice says that somehow a fetus is okay to kill because it is small, less developed, dependent and in the womb. I hear all of that and all I can come to is that it cannot defend itself. But it is special pleading because a toddler is all of those things too, but it is wrong to kill a toddler. And rightfully so. It is also wrong to kill a fetus. But let us call it what it is. It is wrong to kill a baby that is still in the womb.
