To Love a Child
I am told I see the face of children. In a world of business, technology, politics and grown-ups, what in the world does that mean?
They say that to be a Christian, you have to have the faith of a child. We push and prod our children to grow up, so what in the world does that mean?
Christ said that unless you become like a little child, you will never enter the gates of heaven. How chillingly backwards is that?
A child’s faith is not blind. It is only absent of doubts, which in our world can easily become a faith that is gullible. But it is not the child’s faith that is in err. It is the object of the child’s faith that is err-able. If the object of faith is trustworthy, the faith is well earned. If false, then it can be fatal.
A child’s faith in God can be unfaltering. A simple honesty of trust. We are all called to be children. To be a child of God. He sees us as his children. That is why the story is called the prodigal son, not the prodigal man. And God loves all of His children. Prodigal or not.
Jesus said woe to those who cause these little ones to sin. It would be better to be thrown into the water with a millstone wrapped around his neck. A millstone. A massive circular block of stone used to grind agriculture. Jesus said it would be better for this to be done to himself than for him to cause even one of his little children to sin. If that is the passion God has over his children, exactly how important are children to Him?
Tears in the eyes of a child brings tears to the eyes of the Father, but laughter in the eyes of a child brings tears to the eyes of the Father.
There is a reason that the strongest bonds between two people is between the parent and the child. It is because it is soo important to God, and that we were created in his image.
But why would he allow bad things to happen to His children? Why would he allow little kids to starve, drown, die, etc.
Man is responsible for his actions. Which does not address the pain God has allowed, but to alter man’s choices would be to take away his free choice and to do so would take away the free choice to love. It is all about the love. God cannot on the one hand eliminate our ability to do evil, our free choice, for by doing so He would be eliminating the decision to love that He so desires from us (See articles under Theodicy).
God’s children are utterly precious to him. A long time ago I had a prayer that I prayed over and over again. “God, please give me a heart after your own heart. Like David was.” I believe God answered. He said to me. “Love the little children.”
