The Love of God
God is a God of love, and therefore we are called to love. That is the true sign of a Christian, to ‘love one another as I have loved you.’
So what is this love?
I will tell you right now, up front, it is not a love that will get you whatever you want. Only what you truly need (mind you, not what you think you need). The disciples would ask Jesus a question, the pharisees would ask him questions, the teachers of the law and the people of Israel would ask him questions; but he did not always answer their questions. Most of the time he would tell them what they needed to hear, not what they wanted to hear.
It is not a love that will satisfy all of your emotional wants. Do not take me wrong, God’s love is abundant and sufficient, but our emotions are not without fault and God meets us at our need, not our want.
It is a love that knows the end all. This means those needs that God meets are within the realm of the bigger picture, one we cannot always see, which is why many times it is hard to trust that love.
It is a love that says “I have called you by name, you are Mine.” A love that is boundless and unconditional, but with that love comes commitment. It is a love that does not wish to be ignored. It asks for everything for it gives everything.
We love Him because He first loved us, but I go even further. I say we love only because He first loved us. We would be incapable and unable to love if it wasn’t for His love in the first place. Love would be undefinable and incomprehensible if God did not first love. Love abounds because it is a part of who God is, the discrepancies of hatred and pain on this earth is in due part to our fallen nature. Our fallen nature came about due to a poor choice to separate ourselves from that love by disobedience. That choice was given to us as a necessary risk to ensure our ability to love. That love has not been destroyed nor dissipated. It is still as full and real as it was before the fall, our ability to receive it is the only thing that has changed. As such, God’s love is endless, boundless, eternal, unsurpassable, unmeasurable, unfathomable, limitless and unconquerably glorious.
Our hearts cannot encompass the full emotion, of how much God loves us. Our minds cannot fathom the full knowledge, of how much God loves us. Our body cannot sense the complete bliss, of how much God loves us. Our souls could not and were not meant to encompass the full force of how much God loves us, it would be all to much for us. That is how much God loves us, His love for us is stronger than we ourselves can handle. And that is an even further beauty of God’s love, we are not called to carry the burden, God’s love is sufficient, sustainable, consistent, and empowering.
God is love.
He defines love.
Without Him there is no love.
And He loves you.
