Love is...
Will the real True Love please stand up? The man culture passed over stands up. His name is Jesus Christ. “The one who can accept this should accept it.”
What is this Love that Jesus speaks of? You say culture has mistaken love for lust, and the mark of a Christian is love, but what is this love? Surely, is this not a fairy tale? For even the Bible says that each man looks after his own. There is no one who does good. You are looking for perfection; chasing after the wind.
If you say this, you are correct in saying that this true love is a measure of perfection, for this love is divine, but it is not a chasing after the wind for surely it is better to face the light than to walk backwards towards the darkness.
As far as what this love is, I turn one of the greatest descriptors of love found in the Bible, I Corinthians 13. But before I go into the list of attributes, let me put an idea into your mind. If the love I speak of is selflessness, would not a synonym for love be sacrifice? Sacrifice - to give away, allow hindrance for the sake of someone else
Love is.... Sacrifice.
Patient. Giving time.
Kind. Giving thought.
It does not envy. Allowing for their growth over my own.
It does not boast. Because it is not about me.
It is not proud. I wish to benefit them.
It is not rude. It is about them.
It is not self-seeking. And their needs.
It is not easily angered. No matter what they do.
It keeps no record of wrongs. Over and above myself and my needs.
Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. For it is divine.
It always Protects.
It always Trusts.
It always Hopes.
It always Perseveres.
Always.
Love never fails. It cannot, for if you love (sacrifice) someone, it is not the someone who does the sacrificing, but it is you. So if you sacrifice yourself (love) for someone, there is no way your love can fail, for you will have spent your whole self for that someone. It is a steep price to love: your pride, your vanity, your wants, your needs, your preferences, your priorities, your energies, your whole being. Is it worth it? Thousands upon thousands of parents from thousands of years past scream out the answer. Yes!
Love takes your focus away from yourself and applies all of your energies toward someone outside of yourself and by loving, you yourself will be refreshed and strengthened by that affection. Love has it’s own rewards. Life is all about love. The love you receive and the love you give makes all the difference in the world. It reverberates throughout all eternity. The selfless act of Jesus dying on the cross is our example. The mark we set our eyes upon. Walk towards it, not further back into the darkness of egoism.
