Philosophy
Philia - love, Sophia - wisdom. Philosophy is the love of wisdom. Science has it's roots in philosophy, but philosophy has been shifted away from pure science due to it’s search for answers to metaphysical questions. Metaphysical questions like how did we get here? Why are we here? Who are we? How do we truly know anything?
Philosophy molds opinions more than facts do, more than emotions, more than even logic. Philosophy is that which allows you to use facts, emotions, and make sense of logic. What you believe about philosophy likewise has a tremendous effect upon opinions. As opinions are affected, beliefs will follow suit. Beliefs determine actions and your actions define your character. Your character is who you are, who you were, who you make yourself to be.
Everyone believes something about philosophy. Everything has to do with philosophy. Science - can we trust our senses? Mathematics - can we truly trust logic? Relationships - can we truly know someone? Self-confidence - why am I here? History - who is man? Politics - is man inherently good or bad? Ethics - can we know what good or bad is? Religion - are we alone? Education - can we truly know anything? Life - what is the point?
Whether you know it or not, whether you think about it or not, everyone believes certain things about philosophy. Do you know what you believe about philosophy?
Socrates, in the legends, had an oracle foretell that he was the wisest man in Greece. Socrates didn’t believe her. What he did was to go throughout Greece to find out for himself. What he found was that she was right only if it was taken a certain way. He might be the wisest in all of Greece in that he knew what he didn’t know.
What Socrates meant by knowing what he didn’t know is that he was not ignorant of his own ignorance. He knew there was a lot of things he simply did not know, and it did not stop him from learning what those things were. After learning that which he did not know, he kept on learning. For if there is anything common about all knowledge, it is that the more questions you answer, the more questions you have.
Let me encourage you not to get discouraged from lack of answers or problems that seem to hard to understand. Never quite searching for answers.
